ELIGIBILITY
For students seeking a full-time degree at a Partner University:
Asian students interested in pursuing a full-time degree program at one of our Partner Universities are eligible for the AFLSP Scholarship. Our Partner Universities currently include: (1) Hitotsubashi University-ICS, (2) Kyoto University, (3) Peking University, (4) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (5) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (6) The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, (7) Tsinghua University (from 2024-2025 academic year onwards), and (8) Waseda University. As each Partner University operates its own independent selection process for the AFLSP, interested students should read through the program offerings of their university of choice here and contact the university’s office or program administrator directly to express their interest and/or apply for admission.
Please note that the AFLSP Scholarship only supports Asian students who wish to study abroad in Asia at one of our Partner Universities.
For exchange students:
If you are a Japanese student from (1) Keio University, (2) Kyoto University, (3) Kyushu University, (4) The University of Tokyo, or (5) Waseda University, you are eligible for the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship at one of our Partner Universities in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, which currently include (1) Peking University, (2) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (3) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (4) The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and (5) Tsinghua University (from 2024-2025 academic year onwards).
Bai Xian Scholars are welcome to pursue their choice of an undergraduate, or master’s degree or exchange program within the restrictions of each Partner University. Each Partner University operates an independent selection process for the AFLSP in line with BXAI selection criteria. Shortlisted candidates are then recommended by universities to BXAI for final approval. Some candidates may be invited to an interview with BXAI.

Each Partner University has its own AFLSP Program offerings. Students may apply for the AFLSP Scholarship in their third or fourth academic year depending on the unique offerings of their university, which may be viewed here.
Please note that the AFLSP Scholarship offers each student up to US$25,000 per academic year, or a total of US$50,000 per scholar only. If your degree program covers a period longer than two years, the maximum amount of US$50,000 will be disbursed over the course of your degree program.
Students of Japanese nationality AND who are existing students of (1) Keio University, (2) Kyoto University, (3) Kyushu University, (4) The University of Tokyo, or (5) Waseda University are eligible for the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship. This scholarship supports Japanese students interested in a minimum one-year exchange at one of our Partner Universities in Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong, namely: (1) Peking University, (2) Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (3) The Chinese University of Hong Kong, (4) The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, or (5) Tsinghua University (from 2024-2025 academic year onwards).
Please note that the AFLSP Exchange Scholarship offers each student up to US$12,500 for a one-year exchange program.
No. The AFLSP is only open to candidates who have never previously been selected as Bai Xian Scholars.
No, scholarship deferment is not allowed. If scholars decide to defer enrollment to the next academic year and would still like to be a part of the AFLSP, they must reapply for the scholarship.
The BXAI Selection Panel will take into consideration each candidate’s depth of engagement, accomplishments, and aspirations in relation to BXAI’s mission, vision, and core values. Candidates are expected to demonstrate intellectual and academic potential of a high standard, knowledge of global issues, exceptional character, and a commitment to public service. Interviews are conducted in English, and topics are wide-ranging in nature, with questions designed to assess candidates according to BXAI’s selection criteria, as detailed here.
No. Not all candidates are selected for an interview with BXAI’s Selection Panel, so not being invited for an interview does not mean that you have been rejected from the program.
CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
The BXAI Summer Program is an important aspect of the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program (AFLSP) as it offers Bai Xian Scholars a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and build community. All Bai Xian Scholars must commit to attending the BXAI Summer Program in the first summer after enrollment of the AFLSP, and are required to sign a commitment letter upon acceptance of the AFLSP Scholarship that confirms his/her participation at the Summer Program. Failure to attend will result in disqualification from the AFLSP and repayment (by the student to BXAI) of any scholarship funds he/she has already received.
To remain eligible for the AFLSP Scholarship or AFLSP Exchange Scholarship, Scholars must:
- Remain enrolled at the relevant Partner University as a full-time student for the duration of their studies under the AFLSP.
- Remain in the city of the relevant Partner University for the majority of the academic year. If a Scholar leaves the city for over one semester (with the exception of attending a pre-approved exchange program), BXAI may withhold scholarship disbursement or terminate the scholarship.
- Notify BXAI if they decide to pursue exchange or overseas short-term studies during the scholarship period. BXAI reserves the right to withhold scholarship disbursement during the period of exchange or overseas study if a Scholar attends a program outside of Asia and/or pursues non-Asia-related studies. In such an event, BXAI will consider making adjustments to his/her scholarship disbursement schedule (if needed) on a case-by-case basis.
- Notify BXAI if they decide to take on a full-time internship during the scholarship period that requires them to take a semester off. BXAI reserves the right to withhold scholarship disbursement during the internship period. In such an event, BXAI will consider making adjustments to the scholarship disbursement schedule (if needed) on a case-by-case basis.
- Disclose to BXAI in a timely manner if they are a recipient of any other scholarship or form of funding offered by the relevant Partner University or a third party. In such an event, BXAI reserves the right to review the terms of the scholarship offer on a case-by-case basis.
Scholars must also satisfy all of the following requirements upon acceptance of the AFLSP Scholarship:
- Participate in the BXAI Summer Program (spanning up to three weeks) in the first summer after their enrollment in the Scholarship Program. Costs related to travel, accommodation, and other necessary expenses are covered by BXAI.
- Participate in all mandatory programs at the relevant Partner University as stipulated by the AFLSP Scholarship or AFLSP Exchange Scholarship.
- Fulfill all requirements of their degree program within the standard timeframe as set by the relevant Partner University;
- Meet any other specific conditions set by the relevant Partner University; and
- Complete a report provided by BXAI.

ADMINISTRATION AND DISBURSEMENT
The AFLSP offers each scholar up to US$25,000 per year, or a total of US$50,000 per scholar, which may be used towards:
- university tuition fees
- university matriculation and other fees
- accommodation fees
- personal living expenses
Please note:
- BXAI Summer Program costs (local accommodation, round-trip travel to and from the Summer Program location, local transportation to Summer Program events, and meals) are separately covered by BXAI.
- AFLSP scholarships are granted on a need-blind basis.
Each Bai Xian Scholar is offered up to US$25,000 per academic year or a total of US$50,000 over the course of his/her degree program, which may be used towards university tuition, accommodation costs, and personal living expenses. On the other hand, Bai Xian Exchange Scholars are eligible to receive up to US$12,500 for one year only, which may be used towards university tuition, accommodation costs, and personal living expenses.
Scholarship funds are deposited into the Bai Xian Scholar’s designated account in two equal installments per academic year over the course of his/her degree program. BXAI will transfer scholarship funds to the Bai Xian Scholar within 30 business days of receiving the scholar’s proof of enrollment at the beginning of each semester.
Scholarship funds are deposited into the Bai Xian Exchange Scholar’s designated account in two equal installments over the course of his/her exchange program. BXAI will transfer scholarship funds to the Bai Xian Exchange Scholar within 30 business days of receiving the scholar’s proof of enrollment at the exchange university (one of BXAI’s Partner Universities in in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong)
No. Bai Xian Scholars at Participating Universities are required to complete payment of their university tuition fees before receiving their AFLSP Scholarship funds. BXAI will transfer scholarship funds within 30 business days of receiving the Bai Xian Scholar’s (1) proof of enrollment and (2) proof of tuition fee payment.
